New appointment to National Catholic Education Commission welcomed

The Independent Education Union of Australia (IEUA) has welcomed the appointment of Ray Collins to the National Catholic Education Commission.

The commission is a key body advocating for Catholic education at a federal level. Collins has been appointed as Acting Executive Director following the resignation of Christian Zahra for family reasons.

Mr Collins was Director of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle for nine years, until he retired in December 2016. He had worked at the Diocese for 19 years and has been working in the field of education for 44 years.

“Mr Collins brings a wealth of experience to the interim position. His knowledge of matters educational, industrial and political is considerable,” IEUA Federal President John Quessy said.

“His long career in Catholic education will give him valuable insight into the day-to-day lives of our members. Mr Collins will prove a great advocate for Catholic education at this critical time.

“The union enjoyed a positive relationship with Mr Collins at a diocesan level and we look forward to continuing that relationship at a federal level.”
